When shopping for comic boxes, there are a few things to keep in mind. You want a box that is going to last, a box that has the features you want (such as file drawer style doors), and ease of use. Here’s a breakdown of a few different comic boxes. All have been tested in my personal comic laboratory — this means I’ve stuffed tons of books in them, kicked them around a bit, and drunkenly stumbled in to try and organize my books. All in the name of bringing you the bext in comic boxes. I know, I know . . . the sacrifices we make.

the2buds.com Comic Box

The best feature of the 2buds comic box is the price. If you’re on a seriously strapped budget and need comic storage right away, getting 5 long style comic boxes for $25 is about the best deal you’re going to get short of storing your books in an old McDonalds bag. The cardboard is weak — do NOT under any circumstances stack these boxes — and they only come in one size. Though the company claims each box can hold 500 books, I doubt the box could handle that much weight. Still, they are cheap, and if you aren’t that worried about special features or the strength of the cardboard, you could do much worse than 2buds.com comic boxes.

BagsUnlimited Comic Storage Box

Available from BagsUnlimited.com (for about $4 per box including shipping), these boxes are the traditional “long style” comic storage box. Unfortunately, they’re made of rather weak corrugated cardboard, meaning that stacking them or storing the boxes on top of each other in any way is basically impossible. A good economical option for collectors with smallish numbers of books, these boxes are available in three sizes last time I checked, so if you have oversized books or a large collection of quarter-size books you can order for your specific needs. One thing I like about these boxes are the extra deep covers — two inch covers to keep the top of your collection clean and dry in case of an emergency . . . such as a spilled bottle of Mountain Dew. Not that I spilled Mountain Dew all over my collection or anything . . .

DrawerBox

The DrawerBox is my personal favorite comic book storage system. Made from 300-pound test cardboard by the Collection Drawer Company in Denver, Colorado (www.CollectionDrawer.com), these boxes take a serious licking. These boxes are stackable, and my tests determined that four or five boxes high is about the tallest it can get before getting unwieldy. These are the studs of the comic box world, and though they may hold fewer books per box compared to traditional long boxes, your collection will be safely stored in these file-cabinet-style comic boxes. There’s a bit of assembly required after you buy them, and they are a bit pricey at $9 per box, but if you love your collection a little extra work and a little extra cash isn’t asking too much.
